On 8 September Canada began applying counter-tariffs of 15% to 50% on U.S. goods, reported at between C$20 billion and C$28 billion of imports and covering steel, dairy and electronics among other products. When the measures took effect, no talks with Washington were scheduled, and further U.S. escalation was considered likely.

The U.S. 50% tariffs that began on 22 August cover about US$20 billion of Canadian goods, including wine, furniture, dairy, cement and clothing. According to Canada's main small-business association, both countries' new tariffs apply even to CUSMA-compliant goods and have no expiry date, which removes the CUSMA exemption that had shielded most Canada–U.S. trade.

In the July CUSMA joint review the U.S. did not agree to extend the agreement for a new 16-year term. CUSMA stays in force until 2036, but it will now be reviewed every year. Statistics Canada reported on 14 September that consumer price inflation was 3.0% in August. The Bank of Canada's preferred core measures stayed near 2% (CPI-trim 1.9%, CPI-median 2.0%), which suggests that higher fuel prices, not broad price pressure, are keeping headline inflation up.

The policy rate is 2.25%. The Bank of Canada last held it there on 2 September and said that upside inflation risks from the Middle East conflict had increased and that new tariffs made growth harder to predict. Second-quarter GDP rose 3.3% annualised, so borrowing costs are stable for now, but the Bank has said it will adjust in either direction if needed.
